Kargil War: Causes and Background
The Causes of Kargil war has been going on since 1947 when India was divided into two parts (India and Pakistan), After the partition of India, India and Pakistan fought several wars over Kashmir, such as the 1947–1948 war, the 1965 war, and many other wars.
There are many reasons/causes for the Kargil war.
- Another major reason for the Kargil war was the Line of Control (LOC), When there was a war between India and Pakistan in 1971, after that an agreement was signed between the both countries which was known as Shimla Agreement which took place in 1972.
- Nuclear energy was the biggest reason for the Kargil war when India and Pakistan conducted nuclear tests in 1998, Due to which the incident of Kargil war had reached its peak in 1998.
- The Kargil War took place in the year 1999 when around 5000 Pakistani soldiers came to occupy the Line of Control (LOC) in the Kargil sector of Kashmir. Which was named Operation Al-Badr by the Pakistanis
History of Kargil Vijay Diwas (Operation Vijay)
The history of Kargil Vijay Diwas represents an important event for India which was conducted by the great soldiers of our country. This war took place between India and Pakistan. In 1999 when the Pakistani army crossed the Line of Control (LoC) to capture Kargil, then A Kashmiri shepherd got information about this and he informed the Indian Army about it. After this the Indian Army started “Operation Vijay” to drive out all those intruders from the country.
Operation Vijay was a very difficult operation for the soldiers of our country because the Kargil area is at a very high altitude and it was already occupied by the Pakistanis and the temperature there at that time was approximately -10°C. Pakistan’s main objective was to separate Ladakh and Kashmir from India and to drive away Indian forces from Siachen so that they could occupy the place.
This war lasted from May to July, And on 26 July 1999, the Indian Army achieved victory by defeating the Pakistanis through Operation Vijay, which we know today as Kargil Vijay Diwas. 527 Indian soldiers were martyred in this war.

- During the Kargil war, the chief commander of our Indian troops was General V.P. Malik (Army Chief), he led the frontline operations.
- In Kargil war four bravest soldiers survived in very tough time and freed us from Pakistani intruders, they are- Yogendra Singh Yadav (Grenadier), Manoj Kumar Pandey (Lieutenant ), Vikram Batra (Captain ) and Sanjay Kumar (Rifleman). All four soldiers have been awarded the ParamVir Chakra (India’s highest gallantry medal).
- Many soldiers were awarded the Mahavir Chakra, including these brave soldiers – Anuj Nair (Captain), Rajesh Singh Adhir (Major) and Sak Wangchuk (Captain) etc.
- Many of our brave soldiers were martyred during the war, many of whom were awarded the highest honors.
