why is Sawan celebrated?
From religious point of view, Sawan is celebrated for three reasons.
- Samudra Manthan and Halahal Poison: According to Hindu mythology, when the sea was being churned (Samudra Manthan), the poison Halahal came out from there. Lord Shiva put the poison in his throat, for which the gods tried to reduce the effect of the poison by pouring Ganga water on him. This is the same tradition which is being followed even today in which we offer water to Lord Shiva in the month of Sawan.
- Penance of mother Parvati: Mother Parvati did a lot of penance in the month of Sawan to get Lord Shiva as her husband. Any girl who wants to get a good husband worships Lord Shiva by offering water to him in the month of Sawan so that she gets a good husband.
- Chaturmas: Chaturmas is also a reason for Sawan or it is a part of Sawan because when Lord Vishnu goes into Yoga Nidra and Lord Shiva creates the whole universe, then it is considered very good to worship Lord Shiva which we know as Sawan.
